ABSTRACT

In this study, Netflix was examined as the diffusion area of the culture industry. Just as the tools that affect the spread of the dominant culture with globalization expand their spheres of influence by transforming into different forms, how this situation is achieved through Netflix has been researched. While the works produced by a limited number of US-based production companies in the past had the chance to be shown in certain countries in the world, digital platforms such as Netflix increased the issemination potential of the films. This situation is twofold. While the films that are the products of the dominant culture have a global impact, there is a chance for local cultural products to spread on a global scale. Netflix, which broadcasts in 190 countries all over the world, produces local content in many countries it enters. The experience of watching over the web, which became widespread as digital systems broadcasting on the internet diversified and became accessible to everyone, brought a new dimension to the concept of marketing. The change in the viewing habits of users and its effect on content production, Netflix’s influence on the content produced in the Turkish film industry is the reason for this issue. Netflix’s role as a tool in reinforcing the dominant ideology that emerged with globalization has been discussed. At the same time, it has been tried to reveal how the cultural codes of Turkish society are reflected in Netflix’s marketing strategies. Netflix in Turkey, In addition to film distribution processes and film screening, it has been argued that it is effective in shaping domestic content production. The contents produced by the Netflix platform have been the subject of the current debate in Turkey, and in this context, the contents have been analyzed using critical discourse analysis as a research method.

ÖZ

Tüm dünyada 190 ülkede yayın yapan Netflix, girdiği pek çok ülkede yerel içerikler üretmektedir. İnternet üzerinden yayın yapan dijital sistemlerin çeşitlenip herkes tarafından ulaşılabilir hale gelmesiyle yaygınlaşan web üzerinden izleme deneyimi, pazarlama kavramına yeni bir boyut getirmiştir. Kullanıcıların izleme alışkanlıklarının değişimi ve bunun içerik üretimine etkisinin kültür endüstrisi noktasında Netflix Türkiye’nin içeriklerine nasıl yansıdığı bu çalışmanın temel sorunsalını oluşturmaktadır. Globalleşme ile birlikte ortaya çıkan hâkim ideolojinin pekiştirilmesinde Netflix’in bir araç görevi görmesi tartışılmıştır. Aynı zamanda Türk toplumunun kültürel kodlarının Netflix’in pazarlama stratejilerine nasıl yansıtıldığı ortaya konulmaya çalışılmıştır. Çalışmada kültür endüstrisinin yayılım alanı olarak Netflix incelenmiştir. Nasıl ki globalleşmeyle birlikte hâkim kültürün yayılımına etki eden araçlar farklı biçimlere dönüşerek etki alanlarını genişletiyorsa, bu durumun Netflix aracılığıyla nasıl sağlandığı araştırılmıştır. Geçmişte sayılı sayıda ABD menşeili prodüksiyon şirketinin elinden çıkan işler, dünyada belli ülkelerde gösterim şansı yakalarken, Netflix benzeri dijital platformlar filmlerin yayılma potansiyelini artırmıştır. Bu durum iki yönlüdür. Hâkim kültürün ürünü olan filmler küresel düzeyde etki alanına sahip olurken, yerel kültürel ürünler için de küresel ölçekte yayılma şansı söz konusudur. Netflix’in Türkiye’de film dağıtım süreçleri ve film gösteriminin yanı sıra, yerli içerik üretiminin şekillenmesinde etkili olduğu düşüncesi savunulmuştur. Netflix platformu tarafından üretilen içerikler, Türkiye özelinde mevcut tartışmaya konu edilmiş, bu bağlamda araştırma yöntemi olarak içerikler eleştirel söylem analizi kullanılarak irdelenmiştir.
