Pre-Service Science Teachers’ Views on Philosophical and Scientific Books in the Nature of Science Course

ABSTRACT

This study aims to investigate prospective science teachers’ views on Web 2.0–supported instruction of the Nature of Science (NOS) and on the philosophical and scientific books they read within the NOS course. Teaching the nature of science offers a multidimensional learning space that encompasses the structure of scientific knowledge, the functioning of scientific methods, the historical evolution of knowledge, and the philosophical–sociocultural foundations of science. In this respect, it is crucial to develop pre-service teachers’ scientific thinking skills and to enable them to interpret science within its historical and cultural context and to relate it to philosophical concepts. The study was conducted with prospective science teachers enrolled in the Nature of Science and Its Teaching course at a public university in Istanbul during the 2023–2024 academic year. In the course, an instruction enriched with Web 2.0 tools was implemented for the experimental group, and the Nature of Science and History of Science Achievement Test was administered to examine changes in achievement levels. The findings revealed a significant increase in the post-test scores of the experimental group, whereas the increase in the control group was not statistically significant. This result indicates that Web 2.0– supported NOS instruction has a strong positive effect on academic achievement. In addition, a phenomenological design was adopted to explore participants’ experiences in depth. Data were collected through the Web 2.0–based “Philosophical Book Reading Evaluation Form” and semi-structured interviews, and analyzed by content analysis. Prospective teachers analyzed the books through themes such as scientific method, lives of scientists, characteristics of scientific knowledge, rationalism, determinism, and various philosophical ideologies. Many participants related the books to science teaching by proposing learning outcomes, activity designs, and instructional methods. The results show that integrating philosophical and scientific books into science education enhances scientific thinking skills, deepens understandings of the nature of science, and increases reading motivation, while Web 2.0 tools strengthen retention, interaction, and motivation in the learning process.

ÖZ

Bu araştırma, Bilimin Doğası ve Öğretimi dersine katılan fen bilgisi öğretmen adaylarının, Web 2.0 araçlarıyla desteklenen bilimin doğası öğretimine ve ders kapsamında okudukları felsefi ve bilimsel içerikli kitaplara ilişkin görüşlerini incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bilimin doğası öğretimi; bilimsel bilginin yapısı, bilimsel yöntemin işleyişi, bilginin tarihsel dönüşümü ve bilimin felsefi–sosyolojik temelleri üzerine çok boyutlu bir öğrenme alanı sunar. Bu bağlamda öğretmen adaylarının bilimsel düşünme becerilerinin gelişimi, bilimi tarihsel ve kültürel bağlamı içinde değerlendirebilmeleri ve felsefi kavramlarla ilişki kurabilmeleri önem taşımaktadır. Araştırma, 2023–2024 eğitim-öğretim yılında İstanbul’daki bir devlet üniversitesinde Bilimin Doğası ve Öğretimi dersini alan fen bilgisi öğretmen adaylarıyla yürütülmüştür. Ders sürecinde deney grubuna Web 2.0 araçlarıyla zenginleştirilmiş bir öğretim uygulanmış; Bilimin Doğası ve Bilim Tarihi Başarı Testi ile öğretmen adaylarının başarı düzeylerindeki değişim incelenmiştir. Bulgular, deney grubunun son test puanlarında anlamlı bir artış olduğunu, kontrol grubunda ise bu artışın istatistiksel olarak anlamlı olmadığını göstermektedir. Bu sonuç, Web 2.0 destekli bilimin doğası öğretiminin akademik başarıya güçlü bir katkı sunduğunu ortaya koymaktadır. Çalışmada ayrıca nitel araştırma desenlerinden olgubilim kullanılmış; veri toplama aracı olarak Web 2.0 araçlarıyla desteklenen “Felsefi Kitap Okuma Değerlendirme Formu” ve yarı yapılandırılmış görüşler içerik analiziyle incelenmiştir. Öğretmen adayları, okudukları kitapları bilimsel yöntem, bilim insanlarının yaşam öyküleri, bilimsel bilginin özellikleri, rasyonalizm, determinizm ve farklı felsefi ideolojiler gibi temalar doğrultusunda analiz etmiş; bu kitapları fen öğretimiyle ilişkilendirerek kazanım önerileri, etkinlik tasarımları ve çeşitli öğretim yöntemleri geliştirmiştir. Bulgular, felsefi ve bilimsel içerikli kitapların fen eğitimine entegrasyonunun bilimsel düşünme becerilerini, bilimin doğasına ilişkin kavrayışı ve kitap okuma motivasyonunu artırdığını; Web 2.0 araçlarının ise öğrenmenin kalıcılığını, etkileşimi ve derse yönelik motivasyonu güçlendirdiğini göstermektedir.

Qualities of Consciousness: A Panpsychist Analysis

ABSTRACT

The question “What is consciousness?” is one of the oldest and most challenging problems in human thought. The attempt to understand consciousness, which stands at the center of humanity’s existential quest, has given rise to various intellectual traditions throughout history. In this context, panpsychism appears as one of the most deeply rooted approaches within the philosophy of mind. The fundamental principle of this approach is that not only human beings but all entities—whether living or non-living— possess consciousness, even at the most basic level. Although panpsychism has become the focus of criticism because of this claim, the arguments it develops and the strength of its theoretical foundations have led many scholars to regard it as one of the key frameworks for understanding consciousness. For this reason, the present study investigates whether there exists a latent element within panpsychist theory that could guide future theories of consciousness. In the research, the views of thinkers who have reflected on panpsychism were examined using the Grounded Theory method. The obtained data were subjected to conceptual and categorical coding, and efforts were made to identify the open, selective, and theoretical codes associated with panpsychism. The main objective of the study is to examine the nature of the panpsychist consciousness attributed to objects and inanimate entities. Within this framework, the research is expected to contribute, at a theoretical level, to discussions concerning conscious artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and quantum consciousness.

ÖZ

“Bilinç nedir?” sorusu, insanlığın en kadim ve en zor problemlerinden biridir. Varoluşsal arayışın merkezinde yer alan bilinci anlama çabası, insanlık tarihi boyunca farklı düşünce akımlarını da beraberinde getirmiştir. Panpsişizm, bu bağlamda, zihin felsefesi içindeki en köklü yaklaşımlardan biri olarak karşımıza çıkar. Bu yaklaşımın temel ilkesi, yalnızca insanın değil, canlı ve cansız tüm varlıkların en basit düzeyde bile olsa bir bilince sahip olduğudur. Panpsişizm, bu iddiası nedeniyle eleştirilerin odağı hâline gelse de geliştirdiği argümanlar ve teorik zemininin sağlamlığı sayesinde bilinci anlamak için başvurulabilecek temel kaynaklardan biri olarak görülmektedir. Bu nedenle bu çalışmada, panpsişist teori içinde geleceğin bilinç teorilerine yön verebilecek saklı bir unsur bulunup bulunmadığı araştırılmıştır. Araştırmada Gömülü Teori yöntemi kullanılarak panpsişizm üzerine düşünen isimlerin görüşleri incelenmiş, elde edilen veriler kavramsal ve kategorik kodlamalara tabi tutulmuş ve panpsişizmin açık, seçici ve teorik kodları tespit edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Çalışmanın temel amacı, nesnelere ve cansız varlıklara atfedilen panpsişist bilincin ne olduğunu incelemektir. Bu çerçevede araştırmanın, bilinçli yapay zekâ, nesnelerin interneti ve kuantum bilinç tartışmalarına teorik düzlemde katkı sağlayabileceği düşünülmektedir.

Philosophy of Turkish Language and Conditions of Turkish Philosophy In the Context of Yunus Emre

ABSTRACT

Turkish is a language that has the potential to be a language of philosophy, but satisfactory philosophical works have not yet been written in Turkish. In this text, some of the historical conditions, structural problems and pedagogical indecisions that hinder the actualization of the potential of Turkish language are analyzed. It is referred that structural problems include openness to the influence of foreign words, subject-verb distinction in terms of syntax, the stabilizing effect of the “-dır” copula, the agglutinative structure of the verbs, and action-orientedness. While historical conditions allude to problems related to nomadic-sociology, linguistic differentiation of social classes, Islamization and Westernization; pedagogical indecisions refer to political orientations regarding the selection of sources, policies of teaching philosophy through translation, simplification of the language, Self-Turkishization, Arabicization, Englishization attemps and imperfect built-in typing habits. Conditions, problems and indecisions caused delay, division and fragmentation in the Turkish language, the progress towards perfection was interrupted, hence high literary and philosophical works could not be produced. Yunus Emre’s plain poems activated his own potential against this delay and fragmentation, and had the power to represent the competence of the Turkish language alone. Yunus’s poems contain many motifs, descriptions and elements that are highly open to philosophizing about Anatolian wisdom’s intricate nature design, mysticism, social values, ethics of co-existence, religiosity and humanity. Philosophers can philosophize the daily and professional life practices of literary works such as poetry and mythology, revive old words that give intuition and insight, and strengthen them by using new Turkish words more frequently.

ÖZ

Türkçe, felsefe dili olabilme potansiyeline sahip bir dildir fakat Türkçede henüz tatmin edici felsefi eserler yazılamamıştır. Bu metinde, Türkçenin potansiyelinin aktüel hale gelmesini engelleyen tarihsel koşullar, yapısal sorunlar ve pedagojik kararsızlıklardan bazıları analiz edilmektedir. Yapısal sorunlardan, yabancı sözcüklerin etkisine açıklık, sentaks açısından özne-yüklem ayrımı, “-dır” kopulasının sabitleyici etkisi, yüklelerin sondan eklemeli yapısı ve eylem odaklılık kastedilmektedir. Tarihsel koşullar ile göçer-sosyoloji, sosyal sınıfların dilsel farklılaşması, İslamlaşma ve Batılılaşma ile ilgili sorunlara gönderme yaparken pedagojik kararsızlıklar ile terimleştirmede kaynak seçimine dair politik yönelimler, çeviri yoluyla felsefe öğretimi politikaları, dilde sadeleşme, Öz Türkçeleşme, Arapçalaşma, İngilizceleşme teşebbüsleri ile kusurlu yerleşik yazma alışkanlıkları kastedilmektedir. Koşullar, sorunlar ve kararsızlıklar Türk dilinde gecikmeye, bölünmeye ve parçalanmalara yol açmış, mükemmelliğe doğru ilerleyen süreçte gelişim kesintiye uğramış, yüksek edebi ve felsefi eserler üretilememiştir. Yunus Emre’nin yalın şiirleri, bu gecikme ve parçalanmaya karşı kendi öz potansiyelini harekete geçirmiş, Türk dilini yetkinliğini tek başına temsil etme gücüne sahip olmuştur. Yunus’un şiirlerinde, Anadolu bilgeliğinin incelikli doğa tasarımı, mistisizm, toplumsal değerler, birlikte yaşama etiği, dindarlık ve insanlığa dair felsefileştirmeye ziyadesiyle açık, çok sayıda motif, tasvir ve unsur içermektedir. Felsefeciler, şiir ve mitoloji gibi edebi eserlerin, gündelik ve profesyonel yaşam pratiklerinin altında yatan fikirleri felsefileştirebilir, sezgi ve kavrayış gücü veren eski sözcükleri tekrar canlandırabilirler, yeni Öz Türkçe sözcükleri daha sık kullanarak onları güçlendirebilirler.

Heideggerian View of Corporate Work Life

ABSTRACT

The working phenomenon in the present sense was basically shaped after the industrial revolution. In this period that people meet with the term of overtime. The large-scale mechanical technology, the driving force of the rapid transformation of work life, transformed the economy and business people into users and tools. So, what does it mean to transform into a user? What should we understand from the positioning of human being as a tool? An employee and a machine have been considered as each other’s homologous systems in the corporate work life. An employee can do a job, a machine can also do. From now on the interaction will always be bidirectional: Mechanized human and humanized machines. According to Heidegger, in the twentieth century the mechanization encompassed everything human and even the natural world. Heidegger criticized the techno world, shaped by the development of technology, and sought to determine the tasks of thought in the modern world. In this study, today’s corporate work life is analysed in the context of Heideggerian technical criticism. The work life, which has been reformed with all aspects of the IT revolution, identifies some of the conditions of human mechanization and dehumanization. As a result, the hypothesis that the corporate work life is objectified and transformed into the user is supported. The reduction of human to the category of inanimate vehicles is open to multi-dimensional criticism and analysis.

ÖZ

Günümüzdeki anlamıyla çalışma olgusu temel olarak sanayi devrimi sonrasında şekillenmiştir. İnsanın “mesai” kavramı ile tanışması bu döneme denk gelir. Çalışma hayatındaki hızlı dönüşümün itici gücü olan büyük boyutlardaki mekanik teknoloji, ekonomi ve iş yaşamındaki insanı, “kullanıcı” ve“araç”a dönüştürmüştür. Peki, insanın kullanıcıya dönüşümü ne anlama gelir? İnsanın bir araç olarak konumlandırılmasından ne anlamalıyız? Kurumsal çalışma hayatında, çalışan ile makine birbirlerinin homolog sistemleri gibi kabul edilir. Bir çalışanın yaptığı işleri bir makine de yapabilir. Bundan sonra etkileşim her zaman çift yönlü olacaktır: Mekanikleşen insan ve insanileşen makineler. Heidegger’e göre mekanikleşme yirminci yüzyılında insani olan her şeyi ve hatta doğal dünyayı kuşatmıştır. Heidegger, teknolojinin gelişimiyle şekillenen tekno-dünyanın eleştirisini yapmış ve modern dünyada buna karşı düşüncenin görevlerini belirlemeye çalışmıştır. Bu çalışmada, günümüzkurumsal çalışma hayatı, Heideggerci teknik eleştirisi bağlamında analiz edilmiştir. Bilişim devrimiyle kesinlikle tüm yönleriyle yeniden biçimlendirilen çalışma hayatı, insanın mekanikleşmesi ve dehumanizasyon (insansızlaştırma) koşullarından bazılarını tespit etmektedir. Sonuçta kurumsal çalışma hayatının insanı nesneleştirerek kullanıcıya dönüştürdüğü hipotezi desteklenmektedir. İnsanın cansız araçlar kategorisine indirgenmesi, felsefi ve sosyolojik analizlere açıktır.

Technologically Intoxication and Its Symptoms, and Technological Order

ABSTRACT

Until the mid-twentieth century, modern human greatly overlooked to technology’s damage as a poison because of focusing on its benefits as a remedy and an antidote to diseases. Interestingly, the 21st century technology and the achievements of humanity are accompanied by various problems called “side effects” in that text. The first criticisms of the destructive effects of technology were made by the existential philosopher Martin Heidegger. In Heidegger criticism, technology was held responsible for alienating human from authentic essence, for objectification and instrumentalization, and for the global problems experienced in 20th century. After Heidegger, analysis of technology and the dose of criticism have increased every day to mechanization, technologicalization, virtualization, simulation, globalization, dystopia and over the categories. Today, this analysis and criticism continues in a multi-dimensional manner. One of the effective critical analyses was presented in “poison” categories by John Naisbitt. Naisbitt suggested that it caused some kind of toxicity in areas of high technology. He identified six basic symptoms of technologically poisoned areas: Speed passion in everything from religion to feeding, worship of technology, blurring the distinction between real and fake, normalizing violence, loving technology like toys, living life both distant and frantic... In this article, the technologically intoxication thesis was analysed with an analytical method based on literature review. As a result, technology is a popular pharmakon that is devastated to old problems, but it is not possible to remove any side effects such as emergency and effective drugs. Technologically intoxication is the most obvious side effect associated with the diffusion of digital and techno-culture. Therefore, in this informatics revolution, which is directed to “from human to user, from tool to device”, both of approaches “technology as a pure benefit” or “technology as a detrimental addition” are reductive approaches and are insufficient to explain the phenomenon of technologically intoxication. Instead, the advantages of a holistic approach that is based on the power of explanation of “technology design as ontological entities interacting with human beings” and that deals with technology with side effects should be emphasized.

Modern insan, 20. yüzyılın ortalarına kadar teknolojinin hastalıklara bir çare ve panzehir olarak faydasına yoğunlaştığından bir zehir olarak zararını büyük oranda gözden kaçırdı. İlginç biçimde 21. yüzyıl teknolojisinin sağladığı kolaylıklar ve insanlık adına elde ettiği başarılara, bu metinde “yan etki” diye adlandırılan çeşitli sorunlar eşlik eder. Teknolojinin yıkıcı etkilerine dair ilk eleştiriler, varoluşçu filozof Martin Heidegger tarafından yapıldı. Heidegger’in eleştirilerinde teknoloji genelde varlığı, özelde ise insanları otantik özlerinden uzaklaştırmak, nesneleştirmek ve araçsallaştırmaktan, 20. yüzyılda yaşanan küresel sorunlardan sorumlu tutuldu. Teknolojiye yönelik analiz ve eleştirilerin dozu Heidegger’den sonra makineleşme, teknolojikleşme, sanallaşma, simülasyon, küreselleşme, distopya vb. kategoriler üzerinden her geçen gün arttı. Günümüzde bu analiz ve eleştiri girişimi çok boyutlu olarak sürmektedir. Etkili eleştirel analizlerden biri de John Naisbitt tarafından “zehirlenme” kategorisinde sunuldu. Naisbitt teknolojinin, yoğun olduğu bölgelerde bir tür toksiklenmeye (zehirlenmeye) yol açıldığını ileri sürdü; “teknolojik olarak zehirlenmiş bölgeler”in altı temel semptomunu tespit etti: Dinden beslenmeye kadar her şeyde hız tutkusu, teknolojiye tapınma, gerçek ile sahte arasındaki ayrımın bulanıklaşması, şiddeti normal karşılamak, teknolojiyi oyuncak gibi sevmek, hayatı hem mesafeli hem de çılgınca yaşamak. Bu makalede teknolojik zehirlenme tezi ve semptomları literatür taramasına dayalı analitik bir yöntemle analiz edildi. Sonuç olarak teknoloji, eski dertlere deva olan popüler bir ilaçtır fakat her acil ve etkili ilaç gibi yan etkilerinden arındırılması mümkün değildir. Teknolojik zehirlenme, dijital ve tekno-kültürün yayılmasına eşlik eden en bariz yan etkidir. Bu yüzden “insandan kullanıcıya, aletten cihaza doğru” yönelen bu bilişim devrimi sürecinde, “saf bir fayda olarak teknoloji” veya “zararlı bir ek olarak teknoloji” yaklaşımlarının her ikisi de indirgemeci yaklaşımlardır ve teknolojik zehirlenme olgusunu açıklamakta yetersizdir. Bunun yerine, “insanla karşılıklı etkileşime giren ontolojik entiteler olarak teknoloji tasarımı”nın açıklama gücüne dayanan, teknolojiyi yan etkileriyle birlikte ele alan bütüncül bir yaklaşımın avantajları üzerinde durulmalıdır.
