Qualities of Consciousness: A Panpsychist Analysis

ABSTRACT

The question “What is consciousness?” is one of the oldest and most challenging problems in human thought. The attempt to understand consciousness, which stands at the center of humanity’s existential quest, has given rise to various intellectual traditions throughout history. In this context, panpsychism appears as one of the most deeply rooted approaches within the philosophy of mind. The fundamental principle of this approach is that not only human beings but all entities—whether living or non-living— possess consciousness, even at the most basic level. Although panpsychism has become the focus of criticism because of this claim, the arguments it develops and the strength of its theoretical foundations have led many scholars to regard it as one of the key frameworks for understanding consciousness. For this reason, the present study investigates whether there exists a latent element within panpsychist theory that could guide future theories of consciousness. In the research, the views of thinkers who have reflected on panpsychism were examined using the Grounded Theory method. The obtained data were subjected to conceptual and categorical coding, and efforts were made to identify the open, selective, and theoretical codes associated with panpsychism. The main objective of the study is to examine the nature of the panpsychist consciousness attributed to objects and inanimate entities. Within this framework, the research is expected to contribute, at a theoretical level, to discussions concerning conscious artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and quantum consciousness.

ÖZ

“Bilinç nedir?” sorusu, insanlığın en kadim ve en zor problemlerinden biridir. Varoluşsal arayışın merkezinde yer alan bilinci anlama çabası, insanlık tarihi boyunca farklı düşünce akımlarını da beraberinde getirmiştir. Panpsişizm, bu bağlamda, zihin felsefesi içindeki en köklü yaklaşımlardan biri olarak karşımıza çıkar. Bu yaklaşımın temel ilkesi, yalnızca insanın değil, canlı ve cansız tüm varlıkların en basit düzeyde bile olsa bir bilince sahip olduğudur. Panpsişizm, bu iddiası nedeniyle eleştirilerin odağı hâline gelse de geliştirdiği argümanlar ve teorik zemininin sağlamlığı sayesinde bilinci anlamak için başvurulabilecek temel kaynaklardan biri olarak görülmektedir. Bu nedenle bu çalışmada, panpsişist teori içinde geleceğin bilinç teorilerine yön verebilecek saklı bir unsur bulunup bulunmadığı araştırılmıştır. Araştırmada Gömülü Teori yöntemi kullanılarak panpsişizm üzerine düşünen isimlerin görüşleri incelenmiş, elde edilen veriler kavramsal ve kategorik kodlamalara tabi tutulmuş ve panpsişizmin açık, seçici ve teorik kodları tespit edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Çalışmanın temel amacı, nesnelere ve cansız varlıklara atfedilen panpsişist bilincin ne olduğunu incelemektir. Bu çerçevede araştırmanın, bilinçli yapay zekâ, nesnelerin interneti ve kuantum bilinç tartışmalarına teorik düzlemde katkı sağlayabileceği düşünülmektedir.

An Ethical Use Guideline for AI-Supported Assignments: Design and Effectiveness Analysis

ABSTRACT

Artificial intelligence technologies, under the influence of the digital transformation process, are being used increasingly widely in the field of education; in particular, they have become an important tool for secondary education students in the processes of preparing assignments and fulfilling academic tasks. Generative artificial intelligence applications such as ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, and DeepSeek facilitate rapid access to information, conducting research, and text production; however, the use of these tools within ethical boundaries and in accordance with the principles of academic integrity and originality is becoming an increasingly critical requirement. In this context, it is of great importance that students use artificial intelligence consciously not merely as a tool for producing outcomes, but as a supportive aid to learning. This project aims to develop ethical, conscious, and responsible use skills among secondary education students while they benefit from artificial intelligence during assignment preparation processes. In the study, a single-group pre-test–post-test experimental design, one of the quantitative research methods, was employed. In the first stage of the study, students’ existing levels of awareness and attitudes regarding the ethical use of artificial intelligence were determined through a 5-point Likert-Type questionnaire developed by the researchers. In line with the findings obtained from the pre-test, a “Ethical and Conscious Use Guide for Artificial Intelligence–Supported Assignments” was prepared using a simple and clear language appropriate to the student level. The prepared guide covers fundamental ethical principles such as the correct and purposeful use of artificial intelligence, data privacy, citation and referencing, originality, responsible use, accuracy checking, and the limitations of artificial intelligence. In order to increase the effectiveness of the guide, students received training titled “Ethical and Conscious Use in Assignments Prepared with Artificial Intelligence” delivered by an academician; additionally, the content of the guide was reinforced through peer-led trainings presented by students to their classmates. Following the implementation process, the same measurement tool was administered as a post-test, and changes in students’ ethical awareness and attitudes were analyzed. The data obtained from the pre-test and post-test were analyzed using a paired-samples t-test. The analysis results (t = 110.598; p < 0.05) revealed that the developed guide and the implemented training process significantly increased students’ awareness of using artificial intelligence in an ethical, conscious, and responsible manner. The findings clearly demonstrate the importance of systematically and sustainably implementing guides and awareness-raising activities related to the ethical use of artificial intelligence in educational environments at the secondary education level.

ÖZ

Yapay zekâ teknolojileri, dijital dönüşüm sürecinin etkisiyle eğitim alanında giderek daha yaygın biçimde kullanılmakta; özellikle ortaöğretim öğrencileri tarafından ödev hazırlama ve akademik görevleri yerine getirme süreçlerinde önemli bir araç hâline gelmektedir. ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini ve DeepSeek gibi üretken yapay zekâ uygulamaları, bilgiye hızlı erişim, araştırma yapma ve metin oluşturma süreçlerini kolaylaştırırken; bu araçların etik sınırlar içinde, akademik dürüstlük ve özgünlük ilkelerine uygun biçimde kullanılması giderek daha kritik bir gereklilik olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Bu bağlamda, öğrencilerin yapay zekâyı yalnızca sonuç üretmeye yönelik bir araç olarak değil, öğrenmeyi destekleyen bir yardımcı olarak bilinçli şekilde kullanmaları büyük önem taşımaktadır. Bu araştırma, ortaöğretim düzeyindeki öğrencilerin yapay zekâdan yararlanırken ödev hazırlama süreçlerinde etik, bilinçli ve sorumlu kullanım becerilerini geliştirmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Araştırmada nicel araştırma yöntemlerinden biri olan tek gruplu ön test–son test deneysel desen kullanılmıştır. Çalışmanın ilk aşamasında, araştırmacılar tarafından geliştirilen 5’li Likert Tipi anket aracılığıyla öğrencilerin yapay zekânın etik kullanımına ilişkin mevcut farkındalık ve tutum düzeyleri belirlenmiştir. Elde edilen ön test bulguları doğrultusunda, öğrenci düzeyine uygun, sade ve anlaşılır bir dil kullanılarak “Yapay Zekâ Destekli Ödevlerde Etik ve Bilinçli Kullanım Rehberi” hazırlanmıştır. Hazırlanan rehber; yapay zekânın doğru ve amaçlı kullanımı, veri gizliliği, kaynak gösterme, özgünlük, sorumlu kullanım, doğruluk kontrolü ve yapay zekânın sınırlılıkları gibi temel etik ilkeleri kapsamaktadır. Rehberin etkililiğini artırmak amacıyla, öğrencilere bir akademisyen tarafından “Yapay Zekâ ile Hazırlanan Ödevlerde Etik ve Bilinçli Kullanım” konulu eğitim verilmiş; ayrıca rehber içeriği öğrencilerin akranlarına sunduğu eğitimlerle pekiştirilmiştir. Uygulama sürecinin ardından aynı ölçme aracı kullanılarak son test uygulanmış ve öğrencilerin etik farkındalık ve tutumlarındaki değişim analiz edilmiştir. Ön test ve son testten elde edilen veriler, bağımlı örneklem t-testi ile analiz edilmiştir. Analiz sonuçları (t = 110,598; p < 0,05), geliştirilen rehber ve uygulanan eğitim sürecinin öğrencilerin yapay zekâyı etik, bilinçli ve sorumlu biçimde kullanma farkındalıklarını anlamlı düzeyde artırdığını ortaya koymuştur. Elde edilen bulgular, ortaöğretim düzeyinde yapay zekânın etik kullanımına yönelik rehberlerin ve bilinçlendirme çalışmalarının eğitim ortamlarında sistemli ve sürdürülebilir biçimde uygulanmasının önemini açıkça göstermektedir.

Screen Use in Parenting: The Issue of "Digital Abandonment" Among Turkish Families

ABSTRACT

In recent years, parental attitudes have been discussed as critical factors influencing children's tendencies toward digital addiction. The instrumentalization of screens by many parents as "virtual companions" or "digital pacifiers" to facilitate daily life has led to the exploration of the concept of "digital abandonment," a term that introduces a new dimension to the existing literature. This study aims to examine in depth how indifferent, indifferent, and neglectful parental attitudes toward technology affect children's digital addiction processes. Within the scope of the research, in-depth interviews were conducted with 20 families selected through purposive random sampling in Bursa, Turkey. The qualitative data obtained were subjected to thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns and behaviors. The analysis, conducted via MAXQDA 24 qualitative data analysis software, structured several main themes and associated sub-themes, including digital media usage habits, parental mediation and intervention, digital abandonment and the perception of the parental role, and general parental evaluation. The findings indicate that while awareness of digital addiction risks varies according to variables such as age, gender, and socioeconomic status, parents generally tend to exhibit digital neglect behaviors for various practical reasons. The study concludes that digital addiction is not merely an individual problem of the child but is a condition directly correlated with parental attitudes. In this context, enhancing parents' digital literacy, encouraging the adoption of a conscious digital guidance role, and providing educational alternative activities for children are proposed as fundamental strategies for addressing this issue and fostering societal development.

ÖZ

Son yıllarda çocukların dijital cihazlara yönelik bağımlılık eğilimlerinde ebeveynlerin sergilediği tutumlar kritik faktörler olarak tartışılmaktadır. Birçok ebeveynin ekranları gündelik hayatı kolaylaştıran birer "sanal arkadaş" veya "susturucu" olarak araçsallaştırması, literatürde yeni bir tartışma alanı açan "dijital boşvermişlik" kavramının sorgulanmasına yol açmıştır. Bu çalışma; ebeveynlerin teknolojiye karşı geliştirdikleri ilgisiz, kayıtsız ve ihmalkâr tutumların çocukların dijital bağımlılık süreçleri üzerindeki etkisini derinlemesine incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Araştırma kapsamında, Bursa ilinde amaçlı rastgele örnekleme yöntemiyle belirlenen 20 farklı aile ile derinlemesine görüşmeler gerçekleştirilmiş ve elde edilen veriler nitel araştırma teknikleri çerçevesinde tematik analiz yöntemine tabi tutulmuştur. MAXQDA 24 nitel veri analiz yazılımı aracılığıyla gerçekleştirilen analizler sonucunda; dijital medya kullanım alışkanlıkları, ebeveyn denetimi, dijital boşvermişlik ve ebeveyn rolü algısı gibi ana tema ve bağlantılı alt temalar yapılandırılmıştır. Bulgular, katılımcıların yaş, cinsiyet ve sosyo-ekonomik düzeylerine göre farklılık göstermekle birlikte, ebeveynlerin çocuklarının dijital bağımlılık riskinin farkında olduklarını ancak çeşitli gerekçelerle dijital ihmal davranışları sergilediklerini ortaya koymaktadır. Çalışma sonucunda, dijital bağımlılığın yalnızca çocukların bireysel bir sorunu değil, ebeveyn tutumlarıyla doğrudan ilişkili bir olgu olduğu saptanmıştır. Bu bağlamda, ebeveynlerin dijital okuryazarlık seviyelerini geliştirerek bilinçli bir rehberlik rolü üstlenmeleri ve çocuklara eğitici alternatif etkinlikler sunmaları, sorunun çözümünde ve toplumsal farkındalığın artırılmasında temel stratejiler olarak önerilmektedir.

Touching Samsun’s Cultural Heritage Through Digital Learning Materials: A Mixed-Methods Study on Developing Awareness Among High School Students

ABSTRACT

Cultural heritage refers to the totality of the tangible and intangible values, traditions, lifestyles, and collective experiences created by humanity throughout history. This heritage is shaped as a natural result of the interaction individuals establish with the geography in which they live and constitutes one of the fundamental elements that form the identity of societies. Cultural heritage is not only an accumulation inherited from the past but also a guiding reference for the construction of the future. Because it strengthens the sense of social belonging, supports intergenerational transmission, and contributes to the development of historical awareness among individuals, the protection and promotion of cultural heritage are of great importance for sustainable social development. The aim of this study is to determine the awareness levels of high school students studying in the İlkadım district of Samsun province regarding the city’s tangible human cultural heritage elements and to develop digitally supported educational materials to increase this awareness. Another main objective of the research is to create awareness among students about the protection of cultural heritage and to strengthen their perception of local identity. In this context, a digital magazine, informative video contents, and Padlet-based interactive applications were prepared, and hypotheses were formulated that these materials would significantly increase students’ levels of cultural heritage awareness. In the study, a mixed-methods approach combining quantitative and qualitative methods was preferred in order to examine changes in awareness levels in a multidimensional manner. In the quantitative dimension, a single-group pretest–posttest experimental design was implemented, while in the qualitative dimension, semi-structured feedback forms were used to reveal students’ opinions, experiences, and gains regarding the developed digital materials. The dependent samples t-test results obtained from the data analysis (t = 51.917; p < 0.05) revealed a statistically significant increase between students’ pretest and posttest scores. These findings indicate that digitally supported educational materials contribute to students becoming more conscious individuals in terms of recognizing, understanding, and protecting the historical and cultural values of Samsun. Consequently, this study presents an applicable and sustainable educational model aimed at increasing cultural heritage awareness and constitutes a scientific example for similar studies to be conducted in different regions. The findings of the study show that supporting school-based practices with digital tools increases students’ active participation, makes learning more permanent, and strengthens their sense of responsibility toward cultural heritage. In this context, the developed materials serve as a guide for teachers and offer a structure open to cooperation with local governments and non-governmental organizations. The study makes an original contribution by revealing the impact of digitalization in cultural heritage education. In addition, it supports the development of students’ critical thinking, research skills, and respect for local values, and increases the level of social awareness.

ÖZ

Kültürel miras; insanlığın tarih boyunca oluşturduğu maddi ve manevi değerlerin, geleneklerin, yaşam biçimlerinin ve kolektif tecrübelerin bütününü ifade etmektedir. Bu miras, bireylerin yaşadıkları coğrafya ile kurdukları etkileşimin doğal bir sonucu olarak şekillenmekte ve toplumların kimliğini oluşturan temel unsurlar arasında yer almaktadır. Kültürel miras yalnızca geçmişten devralınan bir birikim değil, aynı zamanda geleceğin inşasında yol gösterici bir rehberdir. Toplumsal aidiyet duygusunu güçlendirmesi, kuşaklar arası aktarımı desteklemesi ve bireylerin tarihsel bilinç geliştirmesine katkı sağlaması nedeniyle kültürel mirasın korunması ve tanıtılması, sürdürülebilir toplumsal gelişim açısından büyük önem taşımaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Samsun ili İlkadım ilçesinde öğrenim gören lise öğrencilerinin şehrin somut beşeri kültürel miras unsurlarına yönelik farkındalık düzeylerini belirlemek ve bu farkındalığı artırmaya yönelik dijital destekli eğitim materyalleri geliştirmektir. Aynı zamanda öğrencilerde kültürel mirasın korunmasına ilişkin bilinç oluşturmak ve yerel kimlik algısını güçlendirmek de araştırmanın temel hedefleri arasında yer almaktadır. Bu doğrultuda dijital dergi, bilgilendirici video içerikleri ve Padlet tabanlı etkileşimli uygulamalar hazırlanmış; söz konusu materyallerin öğrencilerin kültürel mirasa yönelik farkındalık düzeylerini anlamlı biçimde artıracağı yönünde hipotezler oluşturulmuştur. Araştırmada, farkındalık düzeyindeki değişimi çok boyutlu olarak incelemek amacıyla nicel ve nitel yaklaşımların birlikte kullanıldığı karma yöntem tercih edilmiştir. Nicel boyutta tek grup ön test–son test deneysel desen uygulanmış; nitel boyutta ise öğrencilerin geliştirilen dijital materyallere ilişkin görüşlerini, deneyimlerini ve kazanımlarını ortaya koymak amacıyla yarı yapılandırılmış geri bildirim formlarından yararlanılmıştır. Elde edilen veriler doğrultusunda yapılan bağımlı örneklem t-testi sonuçları (t=51,917; p<0,05), öğrencilerin ön test ve son test puanları arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir artış olduğunu ortaya koymuştur. Bu bulgular, dijital destekli eğitim materyallerinin öğrencilerin Samsun’un tarihî ve kültürel değerlerini tanıma, anlama ve koruma konusunda daha bilinçli bireyler haline gelmelerine katkı sağladığını göstermektedir. Sonuç olarak bu çalışma, kültürel miras farkındalığını artırmaya yönelik uygulanabilir ve sürdürülebilir bir eğitim modeli sunmakta ve farklı bölgelerde gerçekleştirilecek benzer çalışmalar için bilimsel bir örnek oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmanın bulguları, okul temelli uygulamaların dijital araçlarla desteklenmesinin öğrencilerin aktif katılımını artırdığını, öğrenmeyi kalıcı hale getirdiğini ve kültürel mirasa yönelik sorumluluk duygusunu güçlendirdiğini göstermektedir. Bu bağlamda geliştirilen materyaller, öğretmenler için rehber niteliği taşımakta, yerel yönetimler ve sivil toplum kuruluşlarıyla iş birliğine açık bir yapı sunmaktadır. Çalışma, kültürel miras eğitiminde dijitalleşmenin etkisini ortaya koyması açısından özgün bir katkı sağlamaktadır. Ayrıca öğrencilerin eleştirel düşünme, araştırma ve yerel değerlere saygı becerilerinin gelişimine destek olmaktadır ve toplumsal farkındalık düzeyini artırmaktadır
